Enrolment

The course is open to native speakers of English and non-native speakers of English who have reached at least 7.0 on IELTS or 550 on TOEFL or 213 computer-based Toefl. Prospective candidates should have a first degree or teaching certificate. Selection will be made on the submission of the application form, and a pre-course task. A face-to-face or a telephone interview will be part of the selection criteria.

After sending in the application form, potential candidates will be sent a pre-course selection task. Alternatively this can be viewed and submitted on-line. On satisfactory completion of the task, suitable applicants will either be called for interview, or interviewed by telephone. Successful applicants will then be asked to pay a non-refundable deposit no later than one month before the start of the course. The balance should be paid upon course commencement; there can be no refund of fees should a participant be unable to complete the course.

On receipt of the deposit, participants will then be sent our IALF Cert TESOL handbook. Assessment

Assessment will be made on a continuous basis with the emphasis on classroom practice. Each course will be assessed by an external moderator approved by Trinity College.

Certificates will be awarded by Trinity College, London.
A minimum of six hours of Teaching Practice will be assessed by course tutors and a journal will be kept. Also in this journal will be records of four hours of observation made of experienced teachers, and a class profile, together with a materials design project which will be designed during the course. This will all be assessed. The ability to reflect on lessons and suggest ways to improve upon them carries a lot of weight in the assessment process. Cooperation with peers will be observed throughout the course.

Schedule

The program runs for four weeks with a minimum of 130 hours comprising of input, teaching practice and individual consultations. Expected attendance is 100%.

The course is extremely intensive and demanding. There is a lot of material to be covered and assimilated on the course. The regular observations by tutors and peers during teaching practice can cause considerable strain, particularly to those not used to being observed. Careful evaluation and reflection is required by participants of both themselves and their colleagues' approach to teaching and is central to the course.

Outside of course hours participants will be expected to:

  • undertake pre-sessional reading
  • prepare for lessons and write lesson plans
  • liaise with peers to clarify and share ideas
  • consult with tutors on tasks
  • consult with tutors before and after teaching practice
  • complete set tasks
  • complete homework tasks
